Our beautifully furnished casitas are perfect for anyone seeking a get-away or romantic stay. We cater to people and couples who prefer a rural, retreat-like setting, wanting to relax and enjoy our grounds with the river and mountain views, and perhaps receive a massage or spa treatment in our fully equipped spa area.
We have hand-built, in the traditional way dating back centuries, our buildings from the adobe bricks to the hand-hewn vigas with wood brought down from the nearby mountains. The casitas are inviting and comfortable with warm colors, wood, gracefully plastered walls, and decorated with handmade furniture, antiques, rich textiles, and art in the northern New Mexican style.

Jose Gallegos and Teresa Lifvergren-Gallegos are your hosts, and they delight in getting to know you and cater to making your stay the most memorable Taos has to offer.
The land on which Sunterra de Taos is situated has been in Jose’s family for over four decades. When Jose inherited the land he set out in the traditional style of Taos to create his own adobe house with adobe bricks, some of which he molded himself, and with hand-hewn logs and rocks he hauled from the mountains. Jose is a true artisan and mountain man with an eye for creating the perfect details in his buildings whether it is the herringbone latillas or the meticulously custom made cedar doors and frames. Next he built the sweet casita for Teresa for her first massage studio. After that he hand-built the guest casitas. He also has done all the intriguing rockwork, including rock gardens. Jose speaks fluent Spanish, a plus for those who wish to communicate in Espanol.
Teresa grew up in New York, but was drawn to the Southwest where she was first a kindergarten teacher in the Waldorf School in Sedona. Working with young children and studying the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner has created a deep sensibility, graciousness, and creativity in Teresa. She came to Taos in 1998 to study massage. She has worked in world class spas before opening her own spa at Sunterra de Taos. She specializes in her spa treatments, many of which she created herself, harmonizing mind, body, and spirit into her work. You won’t want to miss a delicious hour or two in her spa. She loves people, her pets, and decorating. When she’s not busy working in her spa or gardens, she’s working on the guest casitas, making them into the most peaceful, cozy, and welcoming accommodations that they can be. |
